TweetDeck for iOS and Android: Kiss Your App Goodbye
TweetDeck is one of the most popular Twitter applications around. And you’re about to lose it.
If you’re an Android device or iPhone owner plugged into TweetDeck on your smartphone, you can kiss your app goodbye.
Beginning in May, the app will be no more. Here’s what Twitter had to say of its decision today:
TweetDeck is the most powerful Twitter tool for tracking real-time conversations. Its flexibility and customizable layout let you keep up with what’s happening on Twitter, across multiple topics and accounts, in real time.
To continue to offer a great product that addresses your unique needs, we’re going to focus our development efforts on our modern, web-based versions of TweetDeck. To that end, we are discontinuing support for our older apps: TweetDeck AIR, TweetDeck for Android and TweetDeck for iPhone. They will be removed from their respective app stores in early May and will stop functioning shortly thereafter.
We’ll also discontinue support for our Facebook integration.
The decision has led to no shortage of head-scratching around the social media world. Why, exactly, is Twitter closing these beloved apps?
“The move to discontinue TweetDeck for mobile devices comes at a time when Twitter has grown increasingly protective of its API, forcing token limits upon competitive services like Tweetbot,” says Matt Clark of IGN. “According to the blog post, Twitter appears to be pushing TweetDeck mobile users over to its own first-party Twitter apps.”
