Sonic CD is a brand new app that has revived the critically acclaimed 1993 platform video game, Sonic the Hedgehog CD. The original video game’s creator, Sega, also developed the app. The fact that Sega is the developer makes it almost a guarantee that Sonic CD will be a hit! Just released today, this now restored classic is already ranking as the 19th top paid iPhone app! The original game was first played on the Game Gear (an old video gaming device) in 1993 and ported to the PC in 1996. Nine years later, in 2005, it was included as a part of the Sonic Gems Collection to be played on the PlayStation 2 and GameCube. This enhanced port was just released not only to the iPhone, but also to the Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and Android. It will be released for the PC and Windows Phone 7 in early 2012. So basically this game, Sonic CD, has been played for 19 years now, which is impressive to any standard.
Sonic CD’s artwork, colors and animation is all created to mimic the original game. It’s amazing. The graphics are far better than anything from 1993, but it has definitely kept its originality. The game-play is easy to learn, having two controls similar to the ones on your old handheld deivce. One on the bottom-left (pictured as four arrows) is used to move Sonic wherever you want him. The other control, on the bottom-right is used to get Sonic to jump. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not near as simple as having a controller in your hand, but you do get use to the touch screen. It gets easier and easier. I’d say these controls are the best you could get on a touch screen, and that’s a huge compliment!
With the original goal in mind of finding all the Time Stones, you help Sonic chase Dr. Eggman through the different worlds to find them. The blue hedgehog is quicker than ever before as these graphics can really get your eyes spinning!
Downloading Sonic CD shouldn’t need much thought for any Sonic or Sega game-lover. It’s re-vamped better than ever, with Retina display features that will blow the original version out of the water! You can challenge your friends to beat your score on the leader boards. Also, back by popular demand, both the US and Japanese soundtracks are offered while playing this classic; you can choose your pick on the menu.
