Sleep Sounds
Sleep Sounds does the job! I use to buy those relaxation cds from Walmart, but this is so much better! I have three of those darn cds, and I paid about $12.00 for each of them! Sleep Sounds has 21 options for different sounds, and it’s only $0.99! I love the variety of different sounds this app offers.
Sleep Sounds also has a timer you can set, so the sounds will not be playing for hours on end after you have fallen asleep. You can choose between time increments of ten minutes, a half hour, an hour or even up to four hours. If you don’t want it on a timer, you have that option, too.
Something I really enjoy about Sleep Sounds are the images! Just looking at the picture of the whale beneath the sea (which is under the sound “Whale Song”) is enough to make me take a deep breath. There’s a sound called “Light Rain” that is sooo peaceful I’m sure that’s a favorite to most. The image is of a cloudy sky with a rainbow. It almost whispers the word “peace” into your ear. Gosh, even talking about the images is relaxing me! You do have the option, under settings, to not show the images to each sound. I imagine one would only do this if they couldn’t fall asleep for the reason of not being able to peel their eyes off the beautiful landscaped image to the sound “Tropical Rainforest”! Haha!
Although the images are already enough to de-stress me after a long day, let’s talk about the sounds. Every sound Sleep Sounds offers is clear, vivid and calming. The sound “Bonfire” has a crisp, clear sound of fire crackling. The sound “Thunderstorm” is a distinct sound of thunder roaring quietly (if that’s possible). The sound “Creek” has a constant sound of water trickling down a stream. There are some funny ones, too! They have a sound called “Distant Lawnmower” that gave me a chuckle! It’s real quiet and sounds exactly like a neighbor, from a few houses down, mowing his lawn. It surprised me at how soothing it was. I couldn’t wrap my head around how the sound of a lawn mower would be relaxing, until I heard it! Then there’s one called “Cow Pasture” with the sound of cows mooing. I guess that might work for some farmers… maybe!
This one isn’t funny, but I wanted to mention it because I think it could be used for a good purpose. Sleep Sounds had a sound called “Heartbeat”. I bet that would work well if someone had a new puppy that didn’t sleep well through the night. I’ve heard about wrapping up a ticking clock in a blanket to remind the puppy of his mother’s heartbeat, but what if you could just set your iPad on a chair next to your new puppy’s kennel? I bet the actual sound of a heartbeat would be better than the clock; plus, it’s not something big and hard you have to put into his kennel.
All that to say, I love this app! I threw out my old Walmart cds! Wish I had downloaded Sleep Sounds a long time ago!
iTunes had a list of features Sleep Sound includes. I listed them below.
- A Mix-And-Match feature to play multiple sounds in harmony.
- A visual power per channel visual meter.
- Adjustable volume for the sound playing without adjusting your device volume incase you need to hear an alert or phone call.
- Pause control.
- Configurable sound player.
