Apple’s iWatch could include an ultraviolet (UV) light exposure sensor supplied by Silicon Labs to warn the wearer if he or she is getting too much sun, according to a note by Barclays analyst Blayne Curtis cited in an AppleInsider story. “These chips measure UV exposure to aid those with elevated risk of sunburn or just a general concern about excessive sun exposure, and we believe they may be of appealing [sic] to OEMs looking to differentiate in a crowded market,” Curtis writes. Read more

Freescale has agreed to buy Mindspeed’s Comcerto business, which offers a range of multicore embedded processors based on the ARM architecture, relates eWeek. “This acquisition will extend Freescale’s reach into gateways and network-attached storage at a time when both are on the cusp of advances in ease-of-use, cloud technology, home automation and security, and the Internet of Things,” says Tom Dietrich, senior vice president and general manager for Freescale’s Digital Networking product group. Read more
