LyftHave you ever come across an app with such a unique idea it could actually be a large business?  Before I go on with my review, I want you to notice that I used the word “unique”.  Lyft by Lyft Inc is exactly what I’m talking about.  It’s a completely new and unique taxi service that doesn’t hire based on taxi-driving experience!  Lyft’s slogan is “your friend with a car”, and it’s actually very fitting.  You can download the app, login through Facebook, set up your pick location and request a Lyft!  Once you’re at your destination, make a “donation” and rate your driver for their effort!  That’s it!  The Facebook login is a safety feature that helps the app maintain a trusted community.  If you want to be a driver, you can sign up for that, too!  You do have to be 23 years old and have your own car that’s a 2000 or newer.  Obviously, you have to have either an iPhone or an Android to be able to access the app at any time.  To be approved to become a Lyft driver, you must pass a phone screen, an in-person meeting, as well as a DMV record check.  All that makes me feel a little safer when getting a lift off of Lyft!  Drivers make up to $35 an hour, while picking the hours they want to work.  Not to mention, they get 80% of the total donations received from passengers, so being a driver can be pretty awesome, too!

LyftWith the drivers being screened and interviewed, I’d have to say that I think Lyft is just as safe as an actual cab ride!  You don’t know those drivers, either!  A plus side would be that the Lyft driver actually wanted to pick you up!  It’s much better than a boring and silent cab ride!  I’d highly suggest checking it out, not only as a passenger, but as a driver, too!

iTunes describes Lyft like so:

Your friend with a car.  Lyft is a friendly, safe, and affordable transportation option. Just tap a button and in minutes you’ll be riding in the front seat with a new friend. Our Lyft community drivers have been background checked and personality screened to offer the best ride experience in the city! Lyft is currently available in San Francisco, LA, Seattle, Chicago and Boston, and we’ll be coming to your neighborhood very soon.  Prepare for Lyft off!

Step 1. Log in with Facebook
Step 2. Set your pickup location & request a Lyft
Step 3. At your destination, make a donation and rate your driver for the effort

Facebook login is a safety feature that helps Lyft maintain a trusted peer-to-peer community. Your privacy and safety are of utmost importance, and we’ll never post ANYTHING to Facebook.  Please note that continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
