Apple iPad Air Reportedly Getting a 2GB RAM Update

Not too long ago, a rumor suggested the iPhone 6 will continue sporting only 1GB of RAM on board, which would likely disappoint Apple fans. Take heart, though…it now appears the purported “iPad Air 2″ may play things a little differently.

According to a new report, the first iPad Air update will feature 2GB of RAM, which is a decent bump since the iPad has featured 1GB of RAM since its third generation. This should improve the performance of the iPad to a great extent, especially during processor heavy games and apps.

The report further mentions that the bump in RAM is limited to the iPad Air 2, not the iPad mini with Retina, which will continue to feature 1GB of RAM when it launches later this year.

It makes sense for Apple to bump the RAM to 2GB, especially for the iPad Air 2, since we’ve heard that Apple is working on a split-screen multitasking feature for the tablet in the upcoming iOS 8. This would consume high memory as it involves running two apps side-by-side—something similar to what Microsoft has done with the Windows 8 operating system. At the moment, reports suggest the split-screen multitasking will be limited to the iPad Air, so it makes sense for Apple to bump up the RAM in the larger tablet for now, if the report is legit.

Apple is expected to announce the upcoming iPad line up later this year, possibly in October. We’ll update you as soon as we get any other information.
